Get a Bond's eye view of London by Maggie O'Sullivan

Posted in DESTINATIONS By Maggie O' Sullivan

The trailer for the new London-based James Bond movie, Spectre, was released last week and it’s put us in a 007 frame of mind. We probably won’t be driving an Aston Martin DB10 through the streets of the capital, but there are plenty of other great ways to channel our favourite spy.

What could be more James Bond than soaring high above the capital in a helicopter? There are several tours available but The London Helicopter is the only helicopter tour company to fly from a central London location. It offers three flight options, costing from £150 per person for a 12-minute flight to £1,500 for a private 30-minute flight for six. The latter goes from Syon Park in the west of the capital, along the river to the Thames Barrier, passing over almost every iconic building you can think of, including the M16 building in Vauxhall, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye (above), The Shard, and Canary Wharf. The London Helicopter has also just launched a new luxury tour of Stonehenge which, though not exactly James Bond, would certainly be a awe-inspiring way to see the prehistoric monument. After viewing Stonehenge from the air, the flight lands at a local airfield and a chauffeured luxury car whisks guests off to experience it at ground level. From £3,800 for two. Further information on London and Stonehenge tours from The London HelicopterWe’re promised an exciting speedboat chase along the Thames in the new Bond movie (Bond fans will recall that Pierce Brosnan did it first in The World Is Not Enough). You can recreate the action – sort of – with a company called Thames Rib Experience which not only has the fastest boats on the river, but plays Bond music during the tours. From £24.50 for a 20-minute rib blast. Further information from Thames Rib ExperienceIf you can wait until October, you can sign up for Jumeirah Carlton Tower’s Ultimate Bond Experience. Not only does it include the use of a Lamborghini Huracán supercar for the weekend (what – no Aston Martin?), but a private helicopter tour of the city and a cruise of the Thames by speed boat. Guests will also receive a discount on a made-to-measure suit at Gieves & Hawkes and a signature martini in the hotel’s restaurant – shaken, not stirred, naturally. From £4,175 per night per suite between 26 October and 31 December 2015. Further information from Jumeirah Carlton TowerYou can get a decent dry martini in just about every hotel bar in London, but if you’re serious about channelling Bond, it has to be Dukes in Duke Street. It was here that Ian Fleming – once a regular – is said to have come up with the immortal ‘shaken not stirred’ line. Dukes’s cocktail of the month is the delicious sounding White Truffle Martini. We can’t imagine 007 ordering it, but there’s no sense in being too purist about these things. Further information, Dukes
