Our little black book of enchanting places

Channel your inner Jackie

Posted in HOTELS + VILLAS By Maggie O' Sullivan

Jackie Kennedy is our new girl crush. Well, not so much Jackie herself as her exquisite clothes, showcased so beautifully in Jackie. We’re hoping for a sequel focussing on her holiday wardrobe. Meanwhile, we’ve been drooling over some of the glamorous places she travelled to.Kennedy Cottage, San Ysidro Ranch, Santa BarbaraJackie and JFK spent part of their honeymoon in 1953 in a hand-carved stone cottage, above, at San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara, California (Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier were married at the same exclusive hotel in 1940). The not-so-humble cottage boasts two master suites with four-poster beds and French doors opening onto a large private deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands. Villa 10, Round Hill, JamaicaJackie and JFK spent another part of their honeymoon in Villa 10, above, at Round Hill Hotel & Villas in Jamaica. They returned often during the next decade, relishing the privacy, the entertainment space and the lawn for their children to run about on. Jackie first visited Mykonos with her sister in the summer of 1961– apparently she wore a red scarf tied under her chin and simple sundress – and was immediately enchanted. Her favourite hotel was Theoxenia, built in the 1960s by Aris Kostantinides, one of Greece’s most revered architects. It still rocks a cool Sixties vibe, so if you feel like channeling your inner Jackie this summer, Thoxenia is the perfect place to do it.Raj Mahal, JaipurIn March 1962 Jackie made a goodwill trip without her husband to India and Pakistan. The Indian-inspired clothes she wore were designed for her by American designer Oleg Cassini and it’s said that she changed her outfit several times a day. In Jaipur she stayed in this shocking-pink-and-turquoise suite at the Rajmahal Palace, still called the Kennedy Suite.Monastero Santa Rosa, AmalfiThat summer, Jackie took her children to Ravello, on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. They stayed at the former residence of King Vittorio Emanuele III, the Palazzo Episopio, and every morning, Jackie went water-skiing in Conca dei Marini. Overlooking Conca dei Marini, high on a cliff’s edge, is Monastero Santa Rosa, one of Italy’s most beautiful monastery hotels. Jackie and her children went there for lunch and today there’s a charming black and white photograph in the bar of the First Lady and her daughter on water-skis.
