There was a time when the only British brand you ever saw in a hotel spa was good old Molton Brown. These days there is a lot more choice. Elemis and Susan Harmworth’s phenomenally successful ESPA range are both widely available; some hotels – such as Babington House in Somerset – produce their own products. Here are my current favourites, used by three of the best hotel spas in the country.

Calcot Manor/delilah

Calcot Manor is a very special country house hotel near Tetbury, 90 minutes’ drive from central London. Just behind the lavender-lined courtyard garden complete with outdoor hot tub, you’ll find a large, dedicated spa with a 16m pool, gym, seven treatment rooms (above), steam room, sauna, and relaxation lounge. This a serious spa and there are several top spa/skincare brands on offer, but the one everyone is excited about at the moment is a new beauty range by delilah.Driven by the lack of boutique British brands, make-up artist Rupert Kingston, beauty buyer Hannah Nicholson and photographer Juliet White set about developing their own. They launched last year and are now in a handful of exclusive hotels. Their products are silky and luxurious, in beautiful, flattering shades – I’ll be using the subtle Sunset Matt Bronzer every day until spring comes. Further information, ;  Ballyfin Demesne/VOYA

It took eight years to restore this Regency mansion on a 600-acre estate in County Laois, Ireland. With just 15 rooms, its aim is to offer the best of Irish hospitality. The food is fabulous, the rooms are fabulous, the pool (above) is fabulous, and the spa is – well, let’s just say it’s so spoiling that the therapist even comes and collects you from your room, so no worrying about somehow ending up in reception in your dressing gown at Ballyfin.

The spa uses an organic range by Irish company VOYA. Launched in 2007 by Mark and Kira Walton, VOYA was inspired by the Walton family’s successful seaweed baths in County Sligo. Seaweed is known for its detoxing and moisturising effects and all the seaweed used in these products is 100 per cent certified organic, harvested by hand. The added essential oils are said to balance the body and soul. What I really like about VOYA products is that while they’re not overly-scented, they have a luxurious rather than ‘worthy’ smell. On the seventh floor of The Berkeley in London’s Knightsbridge there is a wonderful rooftop pool with a retractable roof: on a sunny summer’s day, there’s no better place to be than here. But The Berkeley is one of those London five-stars that is always dreaming up new ways to spoil its guests and a couple of years ago, it introduced not just products by Carole Bamford’s quintessentially English wellness brand, Bamford, but a whole Bamford day spa (above).Bamford Haybarn Spa aims to bring the peace of the countryside to the metropolis, “revitalising tired bodies, restoring weary minds and soothing ruffled spirits”. Treatments use the Bamford Body Collection, launched in 2006, and products are made from naturally sourced, organic ingredients certified by the soil association. They smell divine, too.
