The new series of Poldark has begun, but it isn’t Ross we’re drooling over – it’s the ravishing Cornish landcape. Where to stay? How about one of these three local beauties.Penolva by St Mawes Retreats, CornwallSet between St Mawes Castle and Hotel Tresanton on the Roseland Peninsula, Penolva was built in the early Sixties by a friend of the Queen Mother and is one of very few houses in St Mawes with water frontage. Garden, Penolva by St Mawes Retreats, CornwallWhat makes this four-bedroom house really luxurious though is that it comes with the option of a five-star concierge service which includes a private chef, in-house spa treatments, and personal yoga classes. We agree that doesn’t sound very Ross Poldark, but this part of the Cornish coastline definitely is. Sleeps eight from from around £4,500 per week with St Mawes Retreats.Maryfield House, Torpoint, The Wow House CompanyMaryfield House is a Grade II * listed house near the fishing village of Looe, surrounded by the National Trust Estate of Antony House. Built in 1847, the eight-bedroom former school features mullion windows, exposed stone walls, tapestries and stone fireplaces. There’s also a heated pool and a private garden. It takes about an hour to drive to the Georgian port of Charlestown, where in Poldark’s day tin and copper were loaded onto tall ships, and about the same amount of time to Bodmin Moor, where much of TV series was shot. Sleeps 15 from £1,645 for two nights with The Wow House Company.Right on the edge of Bodmin Moor, Tregulland is a historic barn and cottage which, when rented together, sleeps up to 22. Both buildings have been beautifully decorated and filled with restored furniture to create a quirky, cosy atmosphere. Tregullund is also brilliant for entertaining: there are two state-of-the-art kitchens and a dining room with a 5.5m Douglas Fir table to seat 24. Set in 16 acres of private grounds, the most luxurious feature here is the fresh water indoor pool. Sleeps 22 from £2,124 for three nights with The Wow House Company (Barn and Cottage are also available separately; see website for prices).
