The idea of combining traditional yoga with another discipline is nothing new (New York Nude Yoga, anyone?), but yoga fusion holidays have really taken off this summer. Here are five of our favourite ways to spice up your sun salutations.

Surfing and yoga in Portugal

Tipi Valley is a tented camp in the Algarve, offering surf and yoga programmes. Surfing and yoga (not done at the same time) are an ideal pairing as they both work on balance and core strengthening: mastering a sun salutation will help you get on your feet on a surf board. The five- and seven-day all-inclusive retreats include two yoga classes a day and daily surfing tuition. Contact Tipi Valley for details of prices.

Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) yoga is huge this summer. The Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay version consists of a 30-minute warm-up, followed by a 60-minute masterclass on the paddle board. Kempinski promises ‘the body’s physical ability and balance will be tested to extreme’ – and yes, you probably will fall in. SUP Yoga lessons cost £120 per person, and take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 30 September.Floating and yoga in the US and Corfu

The Fairmont Scottsdale in Arizona was among the first to offer aerial yoga (above) – the idea is that being suspended in a stretchy hammock helps you get deeper into poses and takes the pressure off your vertebrae during inversions. Closer to home, MarBella Corfu hotel has just introduced its version of aerial yoga for guests. Group sessions last 1hr 15 minutes will take place in the purpose built yoga area; one-to-one sessions are also available. From around £195 per night in August.

The Scarlett in Mawgan Porth takes its yoga very seriously and offers guests and spa visitors a range of different classes. If you book a one-to-one session you can try Laughter yoga, which involves voluntary laughter, said to have the same benefits as the real thing. We’re smiling at the thought. One-to-one classes £60 for 60 minutes. Mindfulness, mountains and yoga in Switzerland

You’re right: yoga up a mountain isn’t really fusion yoga – we just love the idea of sun salutations in this 18th-century Walig Hut. The hut, 1,700m above Gstaad, belongs to Gstaad Palace hotel and after your private lesson, you will be served a healthy lunch with Alpine herbal tea. Mindfulness on the Mountain experience from CHF300.
