Restaurant, The Pig, New ForestAccording to a study by OpenTable, we each spend more than £4,000 on eating out every year. We also love our short breaks. No wonder restaurants with rooms are a growing trend. Here are five of the best to tempt you.

Regulars visitors to this blog will know how much we love a Pig and the Pig concept – everything you want in a hotel, nothing you don’t – is very much the blueprint for the modern restaurant with rooms. The Pig at Brockenhurst (above) was the first to open in 2011. Though it has 30 beautifully appointed rooms that wouldn’t look out of place in a posh country house hotel, the restaurant, which serves seasonal dishes made from locally sourced ingredients, is very much the star of the show. And accommodation, incidentally, costs half the price of a posh country house hotel. Rooms from £155 per night; dinner from around £40 per person, without wine.Suite balcony, Waterside Inn, BrayThe Waterside Inn, Bray, Berkshire

The only restaurant in the UK to have retained its three Michelin stars for over 25 years, this is the Daddy of all restaurants with rooms. Michel and Albert Roux opened their legendary riverside restaurant in the early Seventies, adding rooms in the Nineties. There are now 11 bedrooms and suites, either in the main building or in cottages in the grounds. There is no room service but there is a guest kitchen where you can rustle up a coffee or help yourself from the honesty bar and a continental breakfast is served to the rooms. What could be more of a treat than tottering upstairs to bed after a blow-out dinner at The Waterside Inn? Rooms from £255 per night; suites from £590 per night; à la carte lunch or dinner from around £150 per person; six-course tasting menu, £165 per person, excluding wine.21212, Edinburgh21212, Edinburgh

21212 is chef Paul Kitching’s culinary tour-de-force on Royal Terrace, achieving a Michelin star within a year of its opening in 2009 (Gordon Ramsay calls Kitching ‘a powerhouse of the north’). The restaurant and drawing room are set in a Georgian townhouse and there are four spacious rooms on the top two floors for diners with the foresight to book ahead. Little luxuries include views over the gardens or the city, a free-standing bath in the ensuite bathroom and luxury toiletries. Rooms from £110 per night; three-course dinner from £70 per person.Room, The Orange, London SW1The Orange, London SW1

This is one of my favourite restaurants with rooms in London. Downstairs it’s a fairly ordinary gastro pub, but the first-floor Dining Room is a bit of a find: light and airy with a great menu. There are just four bedrooms and though they’re a little on the small side, they’re nicely done (they remind me of The Pig). Breakfast, included in the price, is served in the bar, though you might prefer to slip across the square to one of Daylesford’s chic pavement tables instead. Rooms from £205 per night; dinner from around £40 per person. The Painswick, Painswick, Gloucestershire

The Painswick is a fairly new restaurant with rooms in the eponymous Gloucestershire village. It features a statement restaurant, a first-floor bar, lounge and private dining/meeting room, two beauty treatment rooms and 16 bedrooms (nine in the main house and seven in the adjoining garden wing) which, according to the website ‘whisper peaceful slumber’. That after a dinner of truffle and Iberico ham pizza, moules marinières and chips and rhubarb crumble – we can hardly wait. From £159 per night; dinner around £40 per person.
