Philham Water Cottage, Bideford, Devon, above and top: ‘This friendly little one-up, one-down, built in the 15th century, is rumoured to be the oldest cottage of its kind in Devon. Perched between a leafy lane and a stream, it seems to blend seamlessly into the rural landscape. Asphodel Cottage, Cirencester, Gloucestershire: ‘Asphodel stands out from the well-heeled houses in this quiet village: a hobbity stone shepherd’s cottage with a bushy cap of thatch and trim garden behind. It’s listed – early 1600s – and little has changed outside, but step into a warm, bright living area of soft violet sofas, Indian rug on flagstone floors, a Moroccan lamp, original art. Hard to drag yourself out… but do, for outside are rattan seats hugged by Cotswold stone walls, a scented path over the lawn, a mini wild meadow, apples, plums, herbs to pick.’ Sleeps 2; from £80 per night.
Harlington Manor, Harlington, Bedfordshire: ‘Charles II may have stayed and his bedroom has changed little… Off a busy street yet an ancient dream of a manor house, David’s [the owner] home is a dramatic trove of antiques, art, rich colour, grand piano, rose carvings, gorgeous bedrooms – be swept along by his enthusiasm and generosity, marvel at the attention to detail. Breakfast is served in the magnificent Tudor dining room at one long table: continental with compotes and yogurt, home-baking, tea in heirloom china.’ From £88 per night for a double room.
Yarrow Cottage, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire: ‘Who wouldn’t love a 300-year-old cottage built of Cotswold stone, topped with thatch and steeped in country charm? Albertine roses frame the door, lavender lines the path, and the décor – not the usual play-safe rustic offering – is exquisite, contemporary, and surprising. Imagine Arran-knit cushions on grey cloth sofas, a long low coffee table from an upcycled door, a splash of modern art on an open stone wall, and a stunning glass Buddha head.’ Sleeps 4; from £200 per night.
Hammonds Farm, Stroud, Gloucestershire: ‘This old farmhouse snoozes in its own valley about a mile out of Stroud. It’s been restored from top to toe with lots of original features revealed or reinstated. The surrounding 100 acres are home to 100 alpacas and a small flock of black sheep. There’s a big wood-burner in the guest sitting room, homemade biscuits and little fridges in smart bedrooms, and flowers in every room. Bea serves breakfast in the sunny dining room at separate tables.’ From £100 per night for a double room.
