Stay in your own private art gallery by Maggie O'Sullivan

There are a number of hotels around the world boasting prestigious art collections – but when it opens in Palma de Mallorca next month, the Joan Miró Museum Hotel will be one of only a handful dedicated to a single artist. A short walk from the Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation, it will feature 20 original works by the Catalan artist loaned by the Miró family, displayed both in the common areas and some of the guestrooms. The design of the 97-room hotel is being overseen by interior designer Xisco Gayá in collaboration with the Miró estate and there will be special arrangements for guests to visit the foundation. From £60 per night.

The Cullen, in Melbourne’s Prahran area, is dedicated to the late Adam Cullen, winner of the Archibald Prize in 2000 and one of Australia’s most collectible contemporary artists. Owned by the Art Series Hotel Group, The Cullen is one of six four- and five-star hotels and residencies inspired by a single artist, with original artwork and prints on the walls, dedicated art channels, art libraries, art tours and even art supplies for guests to express their own creativity. The hotel also boasts two of the hottest restaurants in Prahran: Grammercy Bistro and Hutong Peking Duck & Dumpling. Anahory is also an architect and it was he who designed the 146-room hotel: no wonder it has more than a whiff of the city art gallery about it. From £116 per night.Housed in one of Shanghai’s landmark buildings, the Swatch Art Peace Hotel is dedicated not to a single artist but to 18 of them, who are invited by a selection committee to live and work at the hotel for up to 18 months, on the understanding that they will leave a ‘trace’ of their work behind them. For the hotel’s non-creative guests there are a variety of artistic suites, including the Peace Suite (above), plus an excellent restaurant on the top floor with views from the roof terrace over the historic Bund. From £309 per night.Set in a Grade II-listed 17th-century Georgian manor house in Penzance, Artists in Residence is a hotel-cum-gallery, designed by a selection of artists, with hand-painted murals and original canvases by local painters such as Mat McIvor. It’s the second Artists in Residence hotel in the UK (the first was in Brighton) and though it doesn’t have a restaurant, there are plenty in the immediate vicinity. From £75 per night for a 'Small Arty Double'.
