We’re mad about Majorca at Travelwrap Towers. But though we’ve visited Palma’s La Seu cathedral on several occasions, we’ve never stayed in the capital. With so many fabulous places to stay in the mountains or on the coast, why would we choose a city hotel? What we hadn’t realised, until our friends at the Palma Tourist Board got in touch recently, was that Palma has a number of gorgeous hotels with cool rooftop pools, rooftop bars and even a rooftop spa. Here are five, all in the city’s historic old town, that have caught our eye.

Puro might be set in an 18th-century palace, but there’s nothing olde worlde about this contemporary boutique hotel owned by the Swedish Puro Group. Up on its urban sun terrace there are Balinese beds, a small pool, solarium and bar. And if a rooftop doesn’t quite do it for you, the hotel also has a private beach club 12km away with a free shuttle. From around £160 per night midweek.

Set in the remnants of a 16th-century building, ultra-cool Hotel Tres is just metres from the cathedral. Up on the roof there’s a splashpool, sundeck, bar service and a Swedish sauna with panoramic views of the capital. Don’t want to share? Book the suite with private terrace, hot tub, shower and sun beds. From around £158 per night midweek.

Dating back to 1232, Can Alomar has one of the longest histories in Palma. As you would expect, style here is elegant Mallorcan, with antique furniture and period features. What you might not expect is the cool roof terrace, with small pool and Jacuzzi, solarium, and outdoor spa with panoramic views over the city. From around £200 per night midweek.

How could we have missed this gem? Set in a gracious 16th-century town house, just metres from the cathedral, Palacio Ca Sa Galesa is a luxurious five-star with a roof terrace to match: pool, sunbeds and ‘haimas’ with multi-media towers. From around £205 per night midweek.

This chic urban bolthole opened earlier this year on Palma’s beautiful Sant Francesc Square. Set in a 19th-century mansion, it’s a successful blend of old and contemporary Spanish style. Up on the roof there’s a large terrace furnished with Roda sun loungers, bar and small pool. From around £162 per night midweek.
