With the ski season upon us, we asked top ski writer and ski tech editor for Ski+board magazine Gabriella Le Breton, above, for her tips on keeping warm and looking great on the slopes this season. Says Gabriella: “The bright “Opal fruit” colours are in again this winter, especially for women. And I’ve found some thermals that are so pretty you’ll want to show them off in the après-ski bar”

FREEZE THERMALS BY HELLY HANSEN

The key to keeping toasty on the slopes comes down to great basics: keep your core warm and you’ll be able to play in the snow all day long. Norwegian brand Helly Hansen has built its reputation on its thermals which keep you warm while whipping away any perspiration. If you tend to get chilly, plump for the slightly thicker Freeze range (£65 from or £54.95 at the moment from ) which come with an outer layer of merino wool. Another bonus is that the designs are so pretty you’ll feel confident about stripping off to your thermals in the après-ski bar. Available in a range of colours and designs.ANDESSA JACKET BY ARC’TERYX

This Canadian brand specialises in super-technical wear for dedicated outdoor athletes. It is now introducing brighter colours and some slightly less hardcore pieces to its winter collection (look out for pieces with the Arc’teryx name written on them in full, which sets them apart as on-piste pieces), such as this gorgeous Andessa jacket (£650 from ). With a windproof Gore-tex shell, removable powder skirt, underarm vents and steam-sealed zips, it’s every inch a technical jacket yet it comes in a range of bright colours with a relaxed fit. What I think is really clever is the strategic placement of down fill – there’s goose down in the core and sleeves but not in the underarms, where you overheat, or along the hems or hood, where the feathers get wet and clogged up. Also available in orange and black.

SKI MASTER TROUSERS BY ODLO

Justifiably famous for its thermal base layers, this Norwegian/Swiss brand has just launched outerwear and is causing quite a stir. Well cut, technical and fabulous looking, the range ticks all the boxes. These trousers (€380 from ) actually flatter your legs (rare for ski trousers) while also boasting three layers of watertight, windproof material, lightweight Primaloft insulation, good-sized pockets in all the right places and side vents to cool you down if you’re too hot. Also available in black.

GOGGLES BY DRAGON ALLIANCE

If you’re going to be skiing for anything more than a day this season, then it’s worth investing in a good pair of goggles. Not only do they protect your eyes and the delicate skin around them infinitely better from UV damage than sunglasses, but they also prevent the wind getting into your eyes when you’re skiing. These frameless goggles (€239 from ) offer unlimited vision and, while they might not be cheap, they do come with two extremely high quality lenses (one for sunny days, the other for bad light days), which are easy to swap around.

APRES-SKI JACKET BY PERFECT MOMENT

The last thing you want after a long day on the slopes is to have to put your slightly damp, snowy jacket back on again to go out for dinner. Perfect Moment is the concept of Chamonix-based extreme ski film director Thierry Donard, and is the fashion-lovers’ ski wear of choice, combining technical know-how with vibrant colours and great looks. This jacket is made in a buttery-soft navy leather, lined with shearling and filled with down so you won’t only look fabulous, but feel warm as toast in sub-zero temperatures ($1,500 from ).
